BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Prodent Factory is a historic factory site in the center of Amersfoort, which marks the beginning of the re-development project of the New Town in the former oil mill district. In Prodent Factory Several entrepreneurs established.

On 27 May 1937, the Prodent factory opened its doors in Amersfoort. Toothpaste, shoe polish, shampoo and deodorant were produced.

A smelter, tin printing plant, laboratory and the striking factory chimney were built on the site. In 1941, a pipe factory was added, increasing the area of the factory site by a third.

While in recent times only toothpaste was manufactured, in earlier years production included Erdal shoe polish, Vlivo fly swatter, shampoo and deodorant. Many of the products featured a red pelican, Erdal’s logo. Erdal ceased to exist in 1983 after it was acquired by Sara Lee. In 2011, production was moved to France and the factory was closed.

In December 2012, agreement was reached on the purchase of the Prodent factory. The takeover was completed at the beginning of May 2013. The Prodent Factory subsequently formed the starting point of the development project De Nieuwe Stad. An innovative microcity where committed entrepreneurs strengthen each other and where smart ideas and collaborations arise.
